Tips for Service Seekers

  1. Do research. It’s a good idea to find out as much as you can about the projects or programs you’re interested in joining. Gather information, applications, requirements, and other resources before making a decision.
  2. Be persistent. When you contact a service opportunity program or project, be persistent and assertive. It’s okay to make a phone call and to send an email on the same day to express your interest and get more information.
  3. Transportation barriers. If you have a transportation issue and can’t make it to a particular interview in person, ask to keep your appointment but to interview by phone!
  4. Identify barriers. Think about potential barriers to participation. Make a list. Then brainstorm with the program or project staff to identify possible accommodations in advance.
  5. Try new things. Don’t be afraid to try something new. You may find that a service opportunity isn’t what you thought it would be. It’s okay to explore other options that meet your interests and are a better match.
  6. Participate together. Find a friend and participate together. If your friends aren’t interested, don’t give up—do it anyway! Participating in a service opportunity is a great way to meet more people.
  7. Ask for Assistance. If you need it, ask for assistance. This includes things like completing application forms and scheduling appointments for interviews.
